How to Troubleshoot Common Riding Mower Problems

Your Mower Will Break. Here Is How to Fix It Yourself.

Riding mowers are simple machines. An engine. A transmission. Some belts. Some blades. When something goes wrong, it is usually one of five common problems. The repair shop charges $85 per hour plus parts. Most of these fixes take 15 to 30 minutes and cost under $30 in parts. You do not need to be a mechanic. You need to know what to look for. Here are the 10 most common riding mower problems and exactly how to fix them.

Problem 1: Engine Will Not Start

Most likely causes (in order):

  1. Dead battery (hear clicking or nothing at all)
  2. Old or contaminated fuel (mower sat more than 30 days)
  3. Dirty or disconnected spark plug
  4. Clogged air filter
  5. Safety switch engaged (blades on, not in seat, parking brake off)

Fix: Charge or replace the battery first. It is the most common cause. Check that the PTO switch is off, you are sitting in the seat, and the parking brake is engaged. Safety switches prevent starting if any of these are wrong. Drain old fuel and replace with fresh gas. Remove the spark plug, clean it with a wire brush, check the gap (0.030 inches), and reinstall. If none of this works, the carburetor may need cleaning.

Problem 2: Engine Starts Then Dies Immediately

Most likely cause: Old fuel clogging the carburetor. Modern gas with ethanol turns into varnish in 30 to 60 days. That varnish plugs the tiny jets inside the carburetor. The engine starts on the fuel in the line, then dies when it tries to pull through the clogged jet.

Fix: Drain the fuel tank and carburetor bowl. Refill with fresh gas plus fuel system cleaner (like Sea Foam). Run the engine. If it still dies, the carburetor needs to be removed and cleaned. A carb cleaning kit costs $15. A repair shop charges $100 to $150. YouTube has step-by-step videos for your specific engine model.

Problem 3: Engine Runs Rough or Lacks Power

Most likely causes: Dirty air filter (engine is choking), old spark plug (weak spark), water in fuel (causes sputtering), or dirty carburetor.

Fix: Replace the air filter (costs $10). Replace the spark plug ($5). Drain fuel and refill with fresh gas. Add fuel system cleaner to the fresh gas. Check that the fuel cap vent is not clogged (a clogged vent creates a vacuum in the tank that starves the engine of fuel). Run the engine for 10 minutes at high throttle. If it still runs rough, clean the carburetor.

Problem 4: Mower Will Not Move Forward or Reverse

Most likely causes: Drive belt broken or slipped off the pulley, transmission bypass lever engaged (this is a rod you pull to push the mower by hand, usually on the rear of the frame), or low transmission fluid.

Fix: Check the transmission bypass lever first. If it is engaged, the mower freewheels but will not drive. Push it back to the drive position. Inspect the drive belt that connects the engine to the transmission. Look under the mower from the side. If the belt is broken, replace it. If it is still there but loose, the tensioner spring may have broken. Replace the spring. On hydrostatic transmissions, check the fluid level if your model has a fill port (many residential models are sealed and not serviceable).

Problem 5: Blades Will Not Engage

Most likely causes: Deck belt broken or slipped off, PTO switch failed, or PTO clutch failed (electric PTO models).

Fix: Inspect the deck belt from underneath. If broken, replace it. If still intact but loose, check the tensioner pulley and spring. If the belt looks fine, the PTO switch or electric clutch may have failed. On electric PTO mowers, you can test the clutch with a multimeter. It should read 2 to 4 ohms resistance. A reading of zero (short) or infinite (open) means the clutch is bad and needs replacement ($150 to $300).

Problem 6: Uneven Cut or Strips of Uncut Grass

Most likely causes: Deck not level (most common), dull blades (second most common), low tire pressure on one side, or mowing too fast for conditions.

Fix: Check tire pressure on all four tires. Level the deck (see the full guide on adjusting your mower deck). Sharpen or replace the blades. Slow down your mowing speed, especially in thick grass. A deck that is level, blades that are sharp, and a reasonable speed produce an even cut every time.

Problem 7: Excessive Vibration

Most likely causes: Unbalanced or bent blade, loose blade bolt, damaged spindle bearing, or debris stuck on the blade.

Fix: Stop the mower immediately. Excessive vibration destroys spindle bearings and can crack the deck. Check each blade for balance and straightness. A bent blade is obvious (one tip hangs lower). Replace it. Tighten blade bolts to spec (40 to 60 foot-pounds). Check spindle bearings for play by wiggling the blade. If it moves side to side, the spindle bearing is worn and needs replacement.

Problem 8: Battery Keeps Dying

Most likely causes: Battery is old (more than 3 to 4 years), charging system is not working, or something is draining the battery when the mower is off (parasitic drain).

Fix: Test the battery voltage with a multimeter. A healthy battery reads 12.6 volts with the engine off. Start the engine. The voltage should rise to 13.5 to 14.5 volts if the charging system is working. If not, the stator or voltage regulator has failed. Replace it. If the battery drains while sitting, disconnect the negative cable between uses or install a battery disconnect switch.

Problem 9: Mower Pulls to One Side

Most likely causes: Uneven tire pressure, worn steering components, or hydrostatic transmission needs adjustment.

Fix: Check and equalize tire pressure. Inspect the steering linkage for worn bushings or loose bolts. On zero-turn mowers, lap bar tracking can be adjusted. There are usually adjustment bolts on the lap bar linkage that control how each hydro pump responds. Adjust equally to get straight tracking. On lawn tractors, check the steering gear for excessive play.

Problem 10: Excessive Smoke from Exhaust

Most likely causes:

  • Black smoke: Too much fuel. Dirty air filter (engine is running rich) or carburetor choke stuck on.
  • Blue/white smoke: Burning oil. Overfilled oil, worn piston rings, or leaking valve seals.
  • White smoke on startup only: Normal condensation burning off. Not a problem.

Fix: For black smoke, replace the air filter and check that the choke is fully open. For blue smoke, check the oil level first (overfilled is common and simple to fix). If oil level is correct and blue smoke persists, the engine has internal wear. It will need a rebuild or replacement soon.

When to Call a Professional

Most of these problems you can fix yourself. Call a repair shop when: the engine has internal damage (knocking, low compression), the hydrostatic transmission fails (internal hydraulic leak), or you have tried the simple fixes and the problem persists. A good repair shop diagnoses in 30 minutes and gives you a repair estimate. You decide if it is worth fixing or if it is time for a new mower.
