How the lawn fertilizer calculator works

Every fertilizer bag lists an N-P-K ratio — three numbers, like 24-0-4, printed on the front. Those numbers are percentages by weight: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. A 32-pound bag of 24-0-4 fertilizer is 24% nitrogen by weight, which works out to 7.68 pounds of actual nitrogen in that bag. The other 92.32 pounds is filler, phosphorus, potassium, and other carriers.

Soil test reports and lawn care guides almost always give a nitrogen recommendation in pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet, not pounds of product. That's the gap this calculator closes. It takes your lawn's square footage, your target nitrogen rate, and the N percentage on your bag, then works backward to tell you exactly how many pounds of product to spread — and how many bags that comes out to.

The formula behind pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft

If you want to run the numbers by hand, this is the same math the calculator uses:

  1. Total nitrogen needed (lb) = (lawn area ÷ 1,000) × target rate
  2. Total product needed (lb) = total nitrogen needed ÷ (bag's N% as a decimal)
  3. Bags needed = total product needed ÷ bag weight

For example: a 5,000 sq ft lawn at a 0.75 lb nitrogen rate needs 3.75 lb of actual nitrogen. With a 24-0-4 fertilizer, that's 3.75 ÷ 0.24 = 15.6 lb of product. At 32 lb per bag, that's just under half a bag.

A soil test is the most reliable source for your target rate, since it accounts for your soil's existing nutrient levels, grass type, and season. In the absence of a soil test, general guidance for most home lawns falls between 0.5 and 1.0 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per feeding:

  • 0.5 lb — a lighter, maintenance-level feeding, often used for slow-release products or lawns that don't need aggressive growth.
  • 0.75 lb — a common general-purpose rate for cool-season lawns like fescue and Kentucky bluegrass, and many warm-season lawns during active growth.
  • 1.0 lb — a heavier feeding, typically used on warm-season grasses like Bermuda or zoysia during peak summer growth, or when a soil test calls for it.

Most lawns need several applications per growing season rather than one large dose, so check your total planned nitrogen for the year against university extension guidelines for your grass type and region.

Reading a fertilizer bag correctly

The three N-P-K numbers on a bag always appear in the same order: nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. Nitrogen drives leaf and blade growth and is usually the number lawn care programs track most closely. Phosphorus supports root development, and many states restrict high-phosphorus lawn fertilizers unless a soil test shows a deficiency — that's why bags like 24-0-4 show a zero in the middle. Potassium supports overall plant health, disease resistance, and drought tolerance.
