When Your Mower Moves But the Blades Do Not Spin
You are halfway through mowing. The engine is running fine. The mower moves forward when you press the pedal. But the blades have stopped spinning. Or maybe they never started when you engaged the PTO switch. Either way, you are now just driving around your yard making engine noises like a kid on a go-kart.
The drive belt is the most likely culprit. It connects the engine’s power to the mower deck. Over time, belts stretch, crack, fray, and eventually break. Replacing the drive belt sounds intimidating but it is actually a straightforward job you can do in your garage with basic tools. Here is how.
Tools and Supplies
- New drive belt (get the exact model number from your manual or the old belt)
- Socket wrench set
- Work gloves
- Your mower’s manual (for the belt routing diagram)
- Smartphone (take photos before you remove anything)
- Flat surface to work on
Step 1: Identify Which Belt You Need
Riding mowers have two main belts. The drive belt (also called the transmission belt) connects the engine to the transmission. The deck belt connects the engine or PTO clutch to the mower deck pulleys. If the mower moves but the blades do not spin, it is usually the deck belt. If the mower will not move at all but the engine runs, it is the drive belt.
Buy the correct replacement belt. The part number is in your owner’s manual or printed on the old belt itself. Do not guess. A belt that is 1 inch too short or too long will not work. John Deere, Cub Cadet, Husqvarna, and other brands sell OEM belts for $30 to $60. Aftermarket belts are cheaper but wear faster.

Step 2: Take Photos Before You Touch Anything
Use your phone to take clear photos of how the belt is routed around the pulleys. Take photos from multiple angles. The belt snakes around the engine pulley, the PTO clutch, and several idler pulleys on the deck. When you are trying to install the new belt, these photos will be worth their weight in gold.
Also take a photo of the belt routing diagram in your manual. If you lose your manual, most manufacturers have PDFs on their website. Search “[your mower model] belt routing diagram.”
Step 3: Remove the Mower Deck
On most riding mowers, you cannot replace the belt without removing the deck. The deck is heavy (50 to 80 pounds) but removal is designed to be simple.
Lower the deck to its lowest position. Disconnect the spark plug wire. Remove the PTO cable or electric connector from the deck. Remove the pins or clips that hold the deck linkage to the frame. On most mowers, there are 4 attachment points: two front hangers and two rear pins. Slide the deck out from under the mower. Having a helper makes this easier but you can do it alone.
Step 4: Remove the Old Belt
With the deck out, you can see the belt routing clearly. Release the tension on the belt. Most mowers have a spring-loaded idler pulley that keeps the belt tight. Push the idler pulley against its spring to release tension. Slip the belt off the pulleys.
Compare the old belt to the new one. They should be identical in length and width. If the old belt is stretched (which happens over time), the new belt will be slightly shorter. This is normal. The old belt stretched, not the other way around.
Step 5: Route the New Belt
This is the tricky part. Route the new belt around the pulleys exactly as the old belt was routed. Refer to your photos and the belt routing diagram. The belt goes around the outside of some pulleys and the inside of others (specifically the idler pulleys).
The flat side of the belt runs against flat pulleys. The V-shaped side runs in V-groove pulleys. This seems obvious but it is easy to get wrong when you are routing around 6 or 7 pulleys. Release the tensioner pulley. Slip the belt onto the last pulley. Check your routing against the diagram before moving on.
Step 6: Reinstall the Deck
Slide the deck back under the mower. Reattach the hanger pins and clips. Reconnect the PTO cable or electrical connector. Raise the deck to your normal cutting height.
Reconnect the spark plug wire. Start the engine. Engage the PTO switch at low throttle. Listen for unusual squealing or slapping sounds. If the belt squeals, the tension is wrong or the belt is misrouted. Disengage and recheck. If everything sounds normal, increase to full throttle and engage the blades. They should spin smoothly.
Step 7: Test Mow
Mow a small section of grass. Watch for unusual vibrations. Listen for belt noise. Check that the blades are cutting evenly. If everything checks out, you successfully replaced your drive belt. Good job.

How to Make Your Belt Last Longer
Engage the PTO at low throttle, not full throttle. Snapping the blades on at full RPM shocks the belt and shortens its life. Keep the deck clean. Grass buildup under the deck increases resistance on the belt. Check belt tension at the start of each season. A loose belt slips, generates heat, and wears out fast.
