Rain Bird 1804VAN Review: The Adjustable Spray Head Worth Buying

The Rain Bird 1804VAN is a pop-up spray head — not a rotor, not an oscillating sprinkler. It pops up from the ground when water turns on and disappears when it shuts off. I installed 12 in my front yard two years ago. Here is what I learned.

Spray heads are the workhorses of residential irrigation. They cover smaller areas than rotors but deliver a steady fan of water. The VAN in the name means Variable Arc Nozzle — adjust the pattern from 0° to 360° by turning a screw with your fingers. No tools needed.

Real-World Experience

I replaced a mess of mismatched old heads — some stuck down, some stuck up, some spraying the wrong direction. The 1804VAN installs in two minutes. Unscrew the old, thread in the new. The 4-inch pop-up clears my tall fescue lawn completely. I mow right over them.

The VAN nozzle is the selling point. Old heads use fixed-pattern nozzles — need 180°? Buy a 180° nozzle. Need 90°? Different nozzle. The VAN adjusts to any pattern. Turn the center screw clockwise to reduce the arc, counterclockwise to increase it. The outer ring adjusts distance. It takes some fiddling, but it holds once set.

Pros

  • Variable arc nozzle — adjust without swapping, saves time
  • Reliable pop-up — stainless steel spring, fully retracts
  • Easy install — standard 1/2-inch threads
  • 4-inch pop-up clears most grass
  • Wiper seal keeps dirt out
  • Around -6 per head

Cons

  • Plastic body — a mower blade will destroy it if too high
  • 15-ft throw only — spacing needed every 12-14 ft
  • VAN nozzle can be fiddly — small screw requires patience
  • No check valve — get the SAM version for slopes
  • Higher flow than rotors — design zones accordingly

1804VAN vs 1804SAM

The 1804VAN has the adjustable nozzle but no check valve. The 1804SAM has the check valve but a fixed nozzle. Flat yard? Get the VAN. Slopes or low spots? Get the SAM and buy a separate VAN nozzle. Want both? Get the 1804-SAM-VAN.

Verdict

At -6 per head, the 1804VAN is an affordable way to build or upgrade a spray zone. The variable arc nozzle alone saves you from buying and swapping fixed nozzles.

Skip it for large open areas — use rotors instead (they cover 30+ ft). If your grass is over 4 inches, get a 6-inch or 12-inch pop-up model.
