I bought my first Rain Bird 32SA rotor three summers ago. Before that I dragged a hose-end sprinkler around like a caveman — move it, forget it, come back to a swamp. I got tired of being a full-time sprinkler mover.
The 32SA is a gear-drive rotor for permanent in-ground systems. If you want a hose-end sprinkler, this is not it. But if you are building or fixing an in-ground system, this rotor is one of the best values in lawn irrigation.

Real-World Experience
I installed six in my front yard. The old rotors were no-name junk — half stuck, half watering the sidewalk. I needed a full replacement without spending a fortune.
At under each, these are hard to beat. I unscrewed the old rotors, threaded these in, and adjusted them with a flathead screwdriver. The whole job took about an hour.
The adjustment system is what I like most. One screw changes the arc from 40° to 360°. Another controls spray distance. Once dialed in, they hold — mine have not drifted in three seasons.
Pros
- Under per rotor — great value for gear-drive quality
- Arc adjusts from the top — no digging required
- Smooth gear drive — no sticking after three years
- Multiple nozzles included
- Standard 1/2-inch threads, easy install
- Holds adjustment permanently
- Rain Bird reliability
Cons
- Plastic body (tough, but not brass)
- 32-ft max throw — bigger yards need the 42SA or 52SA
- No check valve — get the SAM version for low spots
- Small adjustment screw — fiddly without the tool
- Bottom inlet only
32SA vs 42SA vs 52SA
- 32SA: 19-32 ft — small to medium lawns, most suburban front yards
- 42SA: 26-38 ft — medium to large lawns with wider head spacing
- 52SA: 25-50 ft — big open lawns needing maximum distance
For most homes, the 32SA is the right size. Place them 25-30 ft apart. If your yard exceeds 5,000 sq ft per zone, step up to the 42SA.
Installation Tips
- Flush the line before screwing in the rotor — debris will clog the nozzle
- Use Teflon tape (two wraps) — more risks cracking the plastic housing
- Adjust the arc before burying fully — fine-tune from the top after the system runs
Verdict
At -15, these are a steal. Reliable gear-drive rotation, easy top adjustment, coverage up to 32 feet. For residential in-ground systems, this is the rotor I recommend most.
Skip it if you have a very large lawn (get the 42SA or 52SA) or low water pressure (get the SAM version). But for the average home lawn, the 32SA is the sweet spot of price and performance.
